초록
The purpose of this study is to explore the social origin and lives of transgender, especially ‘kathoey’(กะเทย), who was called ‘the third gender’ in Thailand, and to argue about his/her social roles and gender identity problems. ‘Kathoey’ in Thailand means transgender, who has a biologically innate sex, but pursues different gender identity. Especially, recently ‘kathoey’ became a term that named male to female transgender. The perception and attitude of ordinary Thai people is relatively tolerant for homosexuality or transgender, but the kathoey experiences hardship in his/her life because of various obstacles in the social community. Particularly, diverse limitation factors, for example of legal, cognitive, and social welfare factors, lead to the problems of social inequality and discrimination against kathoey, and it be requested for improvement in the dimension of human rights.
