A Comparative Study on the Concept of ‘Khâo’ in Thai and Its Equivalences in Korean

The aim of this study was to examine the aspect of the Korean equivalences of Thai’s directional verb Khâo and find the co-characteristics and the differences of its concept that impact the alteration of the equivalences. In this research, data were collected from preexistence research, dictionary and also national corpus. From the study, it is found that the word Khâo’s equivalences in Korean are several and these show differences in their syntactic distributions and meanings. It was also found that the alteration of the equivalences involve the concept of Thai people and Korean about the way of reaching the target place and cultural background. In addition, it was also found that there is an auxiliary verb Khâo that can be translated into Korean in the form of its prototype meaning which reflects the co-characteristics about grammaticalization of the word in both languages.
