Abstract

The colonial period of Korean peninsula by Japan is ‘the time that should never be even imagined' by Korean people. For 36 years of the colony, the most powerful weapons for the Korean Viceroy were military police and police. Particularly during this period, the main function of the police was to solidify imperialism, not to enforce laws and maintain social order. In 1911, a year in the era of military police, the number of military police greatly increased by 5,730 or 283%. This oppressed Korean people by overseeing the tasks pertinent to political surveillance, economic police, university police, overseas affair police, promotion administration, and sanitation police. While the era of civilian police was beautifully wrapped under the veil of 'cultural politics', there was no difference compared to the era of military police. Military which had oppressed the people stepped backward and police stepped forward to take the role of military. During this era, shrine worship and change of one' full name were enforced as part of the policies that attempted to abolish Korean culture. The power of police was intensified by greatly increasing the number of rifle, handgun, and policemen. The police organization during the colonial period is characterized by random establishments of various regulations, policeman which mainly consisted of Japanese, incomplete construction of roads and communication facilities, promotion administration and other aid efforts. The terms of military police and civilian police show the Japanese ambition to rule the entire peninsula for the purpose of the maintenance and intensification of the colonization of the peninsula. The atmosphere of not trusting the police originated from the image of Japanese police, which was formed during the Japanese colonial period.
