Abstract
This study was attempted to contribute to improving the quality of nursing care and education of nurses in the intensive care unit by applying the Q-methodology to identify the types of perceptions and characteristics of patient-centered nursing of intensive care unit nurses. In this study, 34 Q samples derived from in-depth interviews were constructed and Q sorting was performed on a total of 32 ICU nurses. The three factors with the highest explanatory power were finally derived through principal components factor analysis (PCA) and varimax rotation analysis using the PQ-method program. As a result of the analysis, Type 1 was named ‘Comprehensive understanding-based patient empathy pursuit’, Type 2 ‘Patient recovery-oriented based on nurses’ competency’, and Type 3 ‘Individualized nursing-based patient happiness pursuit’, respectively. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop customized education program for patient centered-nursing for intensive care unit nurses. In addition, further study should be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the education program from the perspectives of nurses and patients.
