Abstract
The assertion, which the age distribution of crime peaks in the mid of late teen-ages and declines thereafter, widely accepted in criminology. Hirschi and Gottfredson(1983) have argued that these age-crime relationship is invariant across social and cultural conditions. That is, the age-crime curve is invariant over different times, places, crime types, sex, and so on. But there are debates about the shape and universality of the age-crime relationship. This paper aims to test on “invariance hypothesis" of age-crime relation in Korea. Using age-specific arrest data of the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office's ‘Analytical Report on Crime' for the periods of time(1965, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2005), and official criminal data of Japan and USA. we examine and compare whether the shape of the age distribution is invariant over time, across crime types, sex, nations such Japan and USA. The major findings are that there are substantial differences in the age-crime curve across offense types and over periods in Korea. These results are inconsistent with the invariant hypothesis of age-crime relationship that suggested by Hirschi and Gottfredson(1983). From our study, it is implied that future research should attempt to develop a more refined model on the relationship between age and crime.
