Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept of arete, which has a vital importance in the theory of education in ancient Greece, so as to bring about whether it has a significance as an aim of education in a modern sense as well. What is remarkable concerning the idea of arete, is that it has double meanings. One is the special ability in a limited area, such as cookery or martial art. The other is the art of living which everyone desires to acquire. It is called the arete of mind or "seeing the Idea of many aretes". The arete of mind is neither any specific arete nor some kind of mysterious experience which goes beyond ordinary experience. It is the condition of knowledge which makes any specific ability valuable and meaningful. Socratic conversation is a typical example to show that the arete of mind can be communicated. The process of communicating arete embodied in the Socratic conversation is systemized as the "curriculum for philosopher-king" in Plato's theory of education. The acquisition of arete of mind is to get a condition of knowledge which makes possible the comprehensive view connecting many different perceptions, opinions, and beliefs. This comprehensive view produces an attitude or manners which is indispensible in exhibiting a special arete. Arete of mind in this general sense is still significant as an aim of education in a modern sense.
