Abstract

This paper examines the specific nature of word-meaning in the developmental theory of Lev Vygotsky. The theory explains what happens in the developmental stages of the thinking skills. According to Vygotsky, children develop their ability to think by learning special word-meaning at each stage. With a support from the adult, the development continues to reach the level of understanding for the word-meaning at the next stage. At the highest level, children are able to think within the ‘scientific concept(научного понятие)’, in which word-meaning is constructed by different words in the hierarchical order, or genus–differentia. This paper questions how the first form of word-meaning evolves into that of the final form in the developmental theory. For it is essential to understand the characteristics of each stage with the associated word-meaning. To do so, I first identify the features of the first and the final form in its different ways of constructing with the constructed material. While there is no methodological order in the first form in its ‘syncretism(синкрет)’ of representations and images, the final form has a systematic way to combine the words. Previous studies of Vygotsky tend to focus on the differences in the way of constructing between them, but did not pay attention to the different characteristics of word-meaning appeared at each stage. For instance, ‘pseudoconcept(псевдопонятие)’ and ‘potential concept(потенциальное понятие)’, which are to be developed at the final stage for the scientific concepts towards the highest level of thinking, and ‘preconcept(предпонятие)’, which shows how the features of these concepts operate, are not properly analyzed. This study explores the characteristics and the role of word-meaning in Vygotsky through the lens of its materials and the ways of construction.
