『옥낭자전』 주인공의 성격 및 여성의식

이 연구는 「옥낭자전」의 서사구조를 면밀히 살피고 남녀주인공의 성격을 고찰하여 여성의식의 성장과 한계를 밝혀 본 것이다. 시업과 옥랑의 결연 과정을 중심으로 하는 이 작품은 다양한 모티프들이 작용하며 사실적인 표현으로 다른 고소설 작품들보다 흥미 있으며 현실적으로 구성되었다. 「옥낭자전」은 세부적 사건들이 전 단락에 골고루 배치된 서사구조를 지녔다. 이 작품은 일대기적 구성을 바탕으로 남녀 주인공의 ‘1차적 결연→고난→고난극복→2차적 결연’이라는 순환 구조 속에 ‘열행을 통한 결연완성’이라는 주제로 집중되고 있다. 남주인공 시업은 고난 극복과정에서 수동적이며 우발적이고 방관자적인 성격을 가지고 있다. 하지만 작품 후반부에서 효행을 펼침으로써 옥랑의 열행에 걸맞은 남주인공으로서의 면모를 지니게 된다. 여주인공 옥랑은 헌신하는 열행을 통해 과감하고 적극적이며 진취적인 성격을 보인다. 하지만 성혼 이후에는 가부장적 사회질서에 알맞은 전통적인 여성의 모습으로 돌아간다. 옥랑은 남자를 뛰어넘는 과감성과 추진력을 바탕으로 주체적으로 행동하였기에 이 작품은 다른 고소설작품들과 달리 여주인공의 의식 성장을 부각시키고 있다. 비록 이러한 의식의 성장이 가부장적 질서를 더욱 확고히 하는 것으로서 열행을 강조하지만 여성이 주체적으로 생각하고 행동하는 양상은 이 작품만의 독특한 특징이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study is a observation about the narration structure of Oknangjajeon and growth and limitation of woman awareness through the study of woman awareness of the heroine. The work centering around the forming relationship procedure between Oknang and Shiup is more realistic and interested than other classic novel works because it contains various motifs which are effected in and due to the realistic description.Oknangjajeon carries the description structure that all detailed incidents are arranged uniformly in each paragraph. The novel is based on a life historical formation and focused with a theme as ‘forming relationship completion through hard working' in the rotation structure of the hero and the heroin such as ‘1st relationship→Trouble(Suffering)→overcome→2nd relationship’.The hero, Shiup has a characteristic which is passive, accidental and assuming as a bystander in the stage of getting over the hardship. However, in the end of the story, he becomes to devote to his parents being a better man for Oknang. Oknang showed her bold, active and forward looking character through the dedicatory chastity behavior. But after her marriage, she turns back to the conventional woman that well fits to patriarchal system.Because Oknang's awareness was kept boldness and progression over man's thing, we can derive that woman's awareness was brought up. However, such growth of the awareness was emphasized woman's chastity behavior for a way to keep the order of patriarchal system.
