Abstract
This study analyzes women's view of their everyday life in Kyubang-kasa during the Enlightenment period. In particular, the views on 'women' among Yangban-class women in Kyubang-kasa are contrasted with views on 'women' in Enlightenment discourse. For the analysis, the time frame of the Enlightenment period is considered to be from the Kabo Reforms(1894) to 1945, when Korea was released from Japanese rule. The major conclusions of this study are summarized as follows:First, women criticized the everyday life of men's predominance over women, comparing themselves to sinners and Kyubang, their own space, to prison. They felt that it was unfair that they had to be separated from their native family members after marriage.Secondly, women's views were far from that of Enlightenment discourse, which regarded women as members of the nation. Women in Kyubang-kasa tried to be human beings by practicing true traditions, but the Enlightenment discourse emphasized women's role of bringing up sons to be useful national resources.Thirdly, women in Kyubang-kasa were eager for the life of a daughter and a wife, not the life of a daughter-in-law prescribed by Confucianism. Women were eager for the life of a daughter who could practice filial piety toward her parents and the life of a wife whose relationship with her husband was based on love.
