경제위기 상황에서 가족 외부 지원이 경제적 압박에 따른 부정적 영향력을 완화할 수 있는 요인으로서 작용할 수 있는지를 탐색하기 위하여 본 연구는 “경제적 압박에 따른 가족 스트레스 모델”(Conger & Elder, 1994; Conger, Rueter, & Elder, 1999)을 적용하여 1998년도 경제위기 상황에서 191쌍의 부부로부터 수집한 자료를 분석하였다. 가족 외부 지원이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단에 대하여 공변량 구조 분석을 통한 모델 분석 및 다층(stacked) 모델 다집단 분석 결과, 높은 수준의 가족 외부 지원은 경제적 압박과 아내의 정서적 스트레스, 아내의 정서적 스트레스와 부부 갈등의 관계를 중재하는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 가족 외부 지원이 경제적 압박으로 인한 부정적 결과를 완화하여 가족이 건강성을 유지할 수 있는 기제로서 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
From family resilience perspective, this study examined whether external support family perceive moderates marital relationships following economic pressure in the context of Korean economic crisis. The Family Stress Model (Conger & Elder, 1994; Conger et al., 1999) provided a theoretical framework for the development of the analytical model. A total of 191 pairs of husbands and wives with adolescent children provided information about the levels of economic pressure, emotional distress, marital conflicts, and marital satisfaction. Families were divided into two groups by the level of external support and analyzed using multivariate covariance analysis and two stage stacked model procedure to compare the path coefficients of the model between the two groups. Results indicated that external support families receive from outside family may buffer the effects of economic pressure by moderating the relationship between economic pressure and wives' emotional distress and the relationship between wives' emotional distress and marital conflicts. The significant moderating effects of external support suggest that external support can protect families at time of economic recession and hardship.
