Abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of childhood disability on families and to identify the factors related to the impacts perceived by mothers. For this study, descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analyses were performed using data collected from 337members of Parents’ Solidarity of Children with Disabilities in Korea. According to the mothers’ cognitive appraisal, negative impacts of childhood disability were salient in the economic and social aspects whereas positive impacts were prominent in philosophical and mental aspects. That is, most mothers reported that disabilities of their childern caused economic burden and reduced the mothers’ social activities. At the same time, however, many respondents agreed that they could realize what was more important in life and could mature from the experience with their disabled children. Pearson’s correlation coefficient for negative and positive impacts of childhood disability was nonsignificant, indicating that they are independent constructs to each other. Multiple regression results showed that negative impact of childhood disability perceived by mothers were associated with care demands and social competence of a disabled child, the number of housework tasks that mothers took the main responsibility for, marital satisfaction, family empowerment in social service system, and discrimination experience. On the other hand, positive impact of childhood disability perceived by mothers were related to age and social competence of a disabled child, fathers' time spent on child care, marital satisfaction and family empowerment in social service system. In discussion, the implications of this study and practical suggestions for families with disabled children were presented.
