Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of grit on the relationship between academic self-efficacy and adjustment to college life among nursing freshmen. A total of 216 first-year nursing students from S University in D Metropolitan City participated in the study, and data were collected using a self- administered questionnaire from May 8 to May 18, 2025. The data were analyzed using correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis based on Baron and Kenny's method, and the Sobel test with R version 4.2.2. Academic self-efficacy showed a significant positive effect on grit(β=.380, p<.001) and adjustment to college life(β=.447, p<.001). When both academic self-efficacy and grit were entered into the regression model, the effect of academic self-efficacy decreased but remained significant(β=.161, p<.001), while grit had a strong positive effect on college life adjustment(β=.754, p<.001). The Sobel test confirmed the statistical significance of the indirect effect of grit(Z=5.707, p<.001). These findings suggest that grit plays a crucial mediating role and highlight the need for intervention programs to enhance both academic self-efficacy and grit to facilitate successful college adjustment among nursing freshmen.
