Abstract
This study aims to explore whether and to what extent the religion of married person associates with the religion of his/her father, mother and spouse. Utilizing the data from 2008 Korea General Social Survey(KGSS), the study analyzes 913 currently married adults aged 20 to 69. Religion is classified into three groups: Buddhists, Christians(Protestants and Catholics together), and those with no religion. The multinomial logit regression analysis shows that the religion of respondent is associated with that of father, mother and the spouse. The most strong association is found with the spouse, followed by mother and spouse. These findings are in accordance with the hypotheses based on the arguments of religious transmission between generations and religious homogamy and assimilation of religious life between spouses. The religion of parents in childhood remains important in adulthood, while mother has more influence than father. The strong association with the religion of spouse contains implication which are different in its context but operating in same direction. Religion may play an important role in mate selection. In the meanwhile, assimilation of religion between husband and wife may occur during the marriage. The study suggests that the analysis of religion in relation to family need to identify the relevant members and consider how they will exert effects on other’s religion.
