Abstract
The research analyses the effect of grandparents’ supports for child rearing on gender relations of working couples in contemporary Korean society. Full-time working couples is a dual-earner model. Working women are considered that they have a high bargaining power in the family. In fact, working couples have shared care work with their spouse. Even though the working couples share the burden of childcare, which implies gender equality in childcare, this sharing of childcare is only practiced when grandparents take a full responsibility for childcare. Not only working fathers, but also working mothers contribute to childcare as little time as possible. In other words, grandparents mostly take caregiving, especially childcare, and this shows us that the female solidarity is an essential relationship for taking care of household, rather than the equal sharing of care work between young mothers and fathers. In the female bonding for care work, grandmothers become the primary care taker and full time working mothers come to be a second caretaker, meanwhile working young father takes the smallest part of caregiving. Furthermore, the recognition of grandparents’ traditional gender division of labor strengthens the gender division of working couples. As a result, grandparents’ care support has an impact on strengthening the gender division of labor rather than letting the couple share their care work and dismantle the gender division.
