Abstract
These days, meditation is rapidly changing in connection with the fourth industry, including psychotherapy, AI, talking robots etc. There is a need for a Buddhist meditation practice method aimed at solving fundamental human problems beyond the pure function of healing and psychotherapeutic effectiveness. In this study, we examined how the RHS meditation program, which integrates traditional Seon Buddhism and modern psychotherapical meditation and encompasses other practices, applied the six-stage practice outlined in the traditional Seon text, the Ānāpānasati Sūtra. In both the teachings depicted in the ‘Six Realms of Samsara’ and the implications of ‘Ānāpānasati’, it is commonly emphasized that the three karmic actions-body, speech, and mind-arise from the ego’s attachment to self and objects, leading to the cycle of rebirth. To transcend the psychological cycle of the Six Realms, the Six Realms Meditation incorporates a ‘Stop Breathe-Question’ three-step practice to foster awareness of one’s current state within these realms. This corresponds to the stages of counting breaths (數息), following the breath(相隨), calming the mind(止), and observing(觀) as outlined in the Ānāpānasati. In the stage of practicing meditation corresponding to the specific realm one predominantly inhabits within the Six Realms, it helps to be free from pain by coordinating emotions and thoughts like surfing without being swept away by the waves of emotions. This corresponds to the performance of Ānāpānasati’s returning(還) and purifying(淨) as outlined in the Ānāpānasati, and leading to the realization of the impermanence(無常) and non-self(無我) of the five aggregates(五蘊). Ultimately, this practice aids in returning to the pure, original mind, free from suffering.
