Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to examine the effects of life satisfaction on Misogyny perceived by male college students, focusing on the moderating effects of marriage intention. Data were collected from 256 male college students enrolled in 11 universities located in Seoul. Misogyny scale consisted of ‘Hostility toward Women'. ‘Hostile Sexism' and ‘Acceptance of Violence' based on the research that conceptualized male college student's misogyny. The main findings of this study are as follows: First, male college student's reported slightly higher levels of life satisfaction and generally low levels of misogyny. Also, 226 male college student's have intentions of marriage. Second, Those who have lower levels of life satisfaction have higher levels of Misogyny that includes the factor ‘Hostility toward women' and ‘Acceptance of Violence'. Specifically however, life satisfaction did not influence the ‘Hostile Sexism. Third, this study found significant moderation effects of Marriage Intention on the relationships between Life Satisfaction and Misogyny which only includes ‘hostility toward women' factor. In conclusion, male students which have not marriage intention who perceived low levels of life satisfaction reported high levels of Misogyny and Hostility toward Women. These results have bound up with status homogamy, which increases gradually the importance of economic resources that have to get married since 1997, especially for a male. Based on such outcomes, this study suggests that to understand the phenomenon of Misogyny in Korea should consider both macro and micro perspective, which connect social context with an agency and provide empirical evidence that underlines youth policies which raise the possibility to find a job and get married.
