농촌 초고령 노인의 거주유형과삶에 관한 질적 연구

본 연구는 농촌 초고령 노인의 거주유형에 따른 가족 및 지역사회와의 상호작용을 통해 이들의 삶을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 주민등록을 기준으로 구례ㆍ곡성ㆍ순창ㆍ담양에 거주하는 100세 이상의 전체노인과 면접에 동의한 95세 이상 노인 및 그 부양가족을 대상으로반구조화된 질문지를 가지고 심층면접(in-depth interview) 및 참여 관찰(participant observation)을 하였다. 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 2001년 백세인 연구결과와 거주유형의 변화를 살펴본 결과, 가족동거 비율이 감소한 반면 독거가 증가했고 요양시설 거주가 새롭게 등장하여 초고령 노인 거주유형의 급속한 변화를 보여주었다. 다음으로 거주유형별 초고령 노인의 삶을 살펴보았다. 가족동거 초고령 노인의 동거과정은 지속적으로 동거, 고향으로 돌아온 자녀, 자녀 곁으로 돌아온 엄마라는 세 가지 의미단위로 구분, 분석하였다. 초고령 노인 자녀 부양자는 자신이 더 아파도 병원 한번 제대로 가지 못하는 현실, 초고령 노인을 모시는 자부심과 부담감의 양가감정, 어른대접을 받지 못하는 현실로 의미단위를 나누고 해석하였다. 독거노인의 삶에서는 독거노인의 혼자살기의 모습과 이를 가능하게 하는 가족과 지역사회의역할을 조명하였다. 특히 남성독거 백세인의 등장이 새로운 변화로 부각되었고 농촌에서 사회적 상호작용이 이루어지는 마을회관의 의미를 강조하였다. 시설거주 초고령 노인에 대해서는 시설입소과정과 적응, 시설거주 노인과 가족, 지역사회라는 상위주제로 낯선 요양시설에거주하게 되면서 우울과 부적응을 겪기도 했지만, 정기적으로 찾아오는 자녀들과 지역사회참여로 인해 고립되지 않는 삶의 모습을 조명하였다. 초고령 노인 돌봄이 가족에서 제도 및 지역사회로 이동하고 있으나 가족은 여전이 초고령 노인의 삶을 지탱해주는 버팀목으로 존재하고 있었다. 본 연구에서 초고령 노인의 거주유형별로 가족과 지역사회와 어떠한 상호작용을 하는지, 그리고 초고령 노인에 대한 복지 및 정책적 함의에 대해 논의하였다.
Abstract
The meaning of family is a very important issue in the life of centenarians and semi–centenarians. This study explores the living arrangements, family relations and interactions with communities of Korean centenarians. Data is gathered from centenarians and their care-givers through qualitative research methods (in-depth interview and observation) with a semi structured questionnaire in Gurye, Gokseong, Sunchang and Damyang counties. The responses were transcribed verbatim for analysis and to elicit some emerging themes from the interviews. As a results, the living arrangements of centenarians are as follows: ‘live with family’ 51%, ‘live alone’ 32%, ‘live in care facilities’ 17%. About half of centenarians live with adult children while the rest live apart from family members. Themes from the result related to the life changes of centenarians and their family life were elicited in three categories based on living arrangement. It shows changes in the norm of the eldest son's support. Siblings take turns caring for the elderly. The elderly living alone were physically healthier and more cognitive than other types. The elderly living in nursing home were not isolated because their children were visiting. The family structures and family interactions of the oldest old in Korea have dramatically changed. Despite changes in the norm in terms of caring for older parents and the increase in family dissolution of adult children, 83% of the oldest old still live in their communities. These days, family caregiving is shifting more and more to community. Therefore, the systematic cooperation between families and communities has become increasingly important. Such cooperation also makes it possible for the oldest-old to live in their community for a longer time. On the basis of this study, policy and practical implications are discussed.
