후기 폴라니와 경제문명사의 도전 : <인간의 살림살이>를 중심으로

<거대한 전환>의 발간 이후 후기 폴라니의 주요 관심은 경제문명사적 견지에서 근대 시장사회를 재검토하는 것이었다. 이 논문은 <인간의 살림살이>를 중심으로 후기 폴라니의 성취를 살펴보고 비판적 재구성의 방향을 제시한다. <인간의 살림살이>는 이론적으로 실체적 비시장경제학의 성취를 보여 준다. 폴라니는 비시장경제 역사를 살았던 인류의 핵심 화두가 우리 시대와 별반 다르지 않았다고 말한다. 그는 개인적 자유와 공동체적 연대간의 균형점을 잘 찾은 문명은 흥했으며 그러지 못한 경우는 망했다는 교훈을 던진다. 그러나 후기 폴라니의 실체적 경제학은 시장의 착근성 뿐만 아니라 소유와 생산양식의 사회적 착근성을 포섭해야 하며 이에 기반해 경제문명사에서 이중운동의 동학을 재구성해야 한다.
Abstract
Main academic concern of late Karl Polanyi changed towards rethinking the modern market society in terms of the history of economic civilizations. This paper underlines the contribution of late Karl Polanyi, focusing <Livelihood of Man>. Late Karl Polanyi developed new theoretical frameworks of the “substantive economics”. And he also gave an important lesson to us that the historical civilizations with socially embedded economy flourished. However, late Karl Polanyi’s substantive economics needs to develop new horizons that can propose the social embeddedness of property and analyze the dynamics of the “double movement“ in the history of economic civilizations.
