Abstract
This study investigates the impact of exposure to suicide reports via portal news services on attitudes toward suicide reporting regulation. Specifically, it empirically examines the mediating roles of problem recognition regarding suicide reporting, the third-person effect related to celebrity suicide coverage, and perceived influence of such coverage on others. To this end, the study utilized data from the <Suicide Reporting Perception Survey> conducted by the Korea Press Foundation in 2023. The survey was administered to a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults aged 20 to 60 through stratified quota sampling based on gender, age, and region. The data were analyzed using PROCESS Macro Model 6 to test both direct and indirect effects among key variables. The findings are as follows. First, the direct effect of exposure to suicide reports via portal news on attitudes toward suicide reporting regulation was not statistically significant. Second, exposure to suicide reports positively influenced problem recognition, which in turn had a positive effect on attitudes toward regulation, indicating a significant mediating effect. Third, exposure to suicide reports increased the third-person effect of celebrity suicide coverage, which positively affected attitudes toward regulation, however, the mediating effect of the third-person perception itself was not significant. Fourth, exposure to suicide reports positively influenced the perceived influence of celebrity suicide coverage on others, which also positively affected attitudes toward suicide reporting regulation. The mediating effect of perceived influence on others was statistically significant. Fifth, the perception of problems related to suicide reporting did not have a statistically significant effect on the third-person effect regarding celebrity suicide reports, nor was a sequential mediating effect observed. Lastly, while the perception of problems in suicide reporting had a positive effect on the perception of the influence of celebrity suicide reports on others, no sequential mediating effect was found. In conclusion, it was suggested that, in the relationship between exposure to suicide reports and attitudes toward suicide report regulation, the perceived influence on others may serve as a more appropriate explanatory variable than the third-person effect.
