Objectives This study aimed to analyze research trends and assess the efficacy and safety of herbal medicine treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children by reviewing randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods China National Knowledge Infrastructure was used to search RCTs on ASD in children. Publication year, demographic data, interventions, treatment periods, evaluation methods, results, and adverse events were analyzed. Results A total of eight RCTs were selected, comprising 651 pediatric patients with ASD. In most studies, the treatment group showed a significant improvement in ASD compared to the control group. The most commonly used decoction was Guipi decoction (歸脾湯) and the most commonly used herbs were Poria sclerotium (茯苓) and Atractylodis rhizoma (白朮). None of the studies assessing adverse events reported them. Conclusion According to the results of these studies, herbal medicines can be used to treat children with ASD effectively and safely. This study is valuable as it is the most recent analysis of RCTs on herbal medicine for treating ASD in children; however, further systematic clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety
