Abstract

East Asian developmental states have been transformed by the effect of globalization. In orthodox perspective, the conventional developmental states were dismissed or transformed into other state forms. Although East Asian developmental states have developed new state forms, they are not a conventional developmental state. However, Singapore and China have sustained the developmental state successfully. The cases of Singapore and China are therefore interesting and unusual in exploring the relationship between globalization and developmental state. This paper examines how the Singapore and China developmental state, unlike the other East Asian developmental states, have been maintained. In addition, it reinterprets the relationship between globalization and developmental state through this analysis.
