한국 신문에 나타난 여성스포츠 사진 보도의 이데올로기

이 연구는 대한민국 정부 수립 이후 55년간 주요 일간지에 보도된 여성스포츠 사진을 분석함으로써 한국 인쇄매체에 나타난 성편향적․민족주의적 이데올로기를 고찰한다. 분석 대상은 1948년부터 2003년까지 55년간 발간된 동아일보로서, 이 중 Stempel(1952)의 표집 방법에 따라 48일 간격으로 총 392일분을 표집하여 스포츠 사진과 캡션, 관련 기사의 제목을 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 주제분석을 실시하여 (가) 민족주의의 표명, (나) 여성 운동선수의 사소화 및 한계화, (다) 여성 신체의 성상품화 등 세 가지 주제를 도출하고 이에 따라 자료를 분석하였다. 연구 결과 지난 반세기 동안 한국 일간지의 스포츠 보도에서는 지속적으로 여성 운동선수를 민족주의의 표상으로 표현하여 왔으며, 이러한 경향은 올림픽 시기에 두드러지게 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 1970년대 이후에는 여성 운동선수의 사소화 및 한계화, 사회적으로 용인된 여성성의 부각, 여성 신체의 성적 대상화 등 성편향적 이데올로기가 발견되지만, 한국 여성 운동선수를 보도하는 데 있어서 중심적 이데올로기는 여전히 민족주의인 것으로 확인되었으며, 특히 여성 신체의 성적 대상화 경향은 외국 운동선수나 관중의 사진 보도에서 주로 나타났다.

Abstract

This study investigates gendered and nationalistic quality of Korean printed media by analyzing the photographic coverage of women's sport in a major daily newspaper since the establishment of Korean government. 55 years of Donga Ilbo published between 1948 and 2003 were sampled at 48 days intervals based on Stempel(1952)'s sampling method. Total 392 days of data was collected by gathering sport photographs and its headline and caption. As a result of categorization of themes appeared in the data, three major themes were drawn for data analysis. Data analysis was conducted according to these three themes: (a) manifestation of nationalism, (b) marginalization of women athletes and emphasis of femininity, and (c) sexualization of female bodies. The result shows that there has been constant exhibition of nationalistic image of sport women during past half century, especially when it comes to Olympic Games. Although there appeared gendered ideology since 1970s, including trivialization or marginalization of women athletes, depiction of appropriate femininity, and sexualization of female bodies, nationalism has been the central ideology in portraying Korean women athletes. Furthermore, it was found that sexualization of female body was witnessed only in case of foreign athletes or spectators.
