Abstract

An functional Magnetic Resonance Image (fMRI) was conducted while the subjects were involved in kinesthetic and visual imagery regarding a golf putting task. Brain activation patterns according to the two types of imagery showed that the cerebellum (posterior lobe & anterior lobe), the occipital lobe (BA 18, 19), the hippocampus, the parietal lobe (BA 2, 7, 40), the fusiform gyrus (BA 37), the temporal lobe (BA 37, 39), supplemental motor cortex (SMA; BA 6), the medial frontal gyrus (BA 6), and precentral gyrus (BA 6) were activated during visual imagery, whereas the anterior cingulate cortex (BA 32), the inferior parietal lobule (BA 40), the postcentral gyrus (BA 2), the superior temporal gyrus (BA 42), and the frontal lobe (BA 6, 9, 10, 32) were activated during kinesthetic imagery. The results of the present study indicated that imagery activates frontal area which combines information and relates to cognitive function of planning motion regardless of types of imagery. It was noted that visual imagery especially activates the occipital area and the cerebellum while kinesthetic imagery activates somatosensory cortex which is involved in execution. The findings suggested that the brain activation varies according to the type of imagery.
