Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify and correct errors in fish names in the 『Standard Korean Dictionary』, 『Grand Korean Dictionary』, ≪Urimalsam≫. The subjects of the study are fish names written in Chinese characters Alaska Pollock, Red Tongue Sole, and Bic eyed herring. The method of study is to first compare the ancient documents mentioned by fish names such as 『Hyeonsaneobo』, 『Uhaeieobo』, 『Jeoneoji』 and 『Mulmyeonggo』 and 『Gwang jaemulbo』 and then, compared with 『Hangugeodobo』, to examine the errors against the 『Standard Korean dictionary』, 『Grand Korean Dictionary』, ≪Urimalsam≫. The results of this study are as follows. First, the ‘Haegeyeo(海鷄魚)’ fish name in the stingray was an error in ‘Haeyoeo(海󰜇魚)’ and ‘Hwanghong(黃紅)’ was a misrepresentation of Chinese characters in ‘Hwanghong(黃魟)’. The fish name ‘Haegyeeo(海鷄魚)’ appears because it reproduced the error of 『 Hangugeodobo』. Second, in the case of Alaska pollack, ‘Taeeo(馱魚)’ is the name of a fish that did not appear in the old literature. This is a shortened version of ‘Myeongtae(明鮐魚)’ and the Chinese characters were misrepresented. In addition, ‘Bukungeo(北薨魚)’, a name for dried pollack, is an error in ‘Bukgoeo(北薧魚)’ which is a reproduction of 『Hangugeodobo』. Third, for Red Tongue Sole, the fish name ‘Bungmogeo(北木魚)’ is a Chinese character error in ‘Bimogeo(比目魚)’. This is also a transcription of the error in 『Hangugeodobo』. In addition, the fish name ‘Hwajeoeo(靴低魚)’ is incorrectly spelled ‘Hyejeoeo(鞋底魚)’, which is the bottom of the shoe. Finally, the fish name ‘Geuneo(勤魚)’ in Bic eyed herring is an error in ‘Neugeo(勒魚)’, another notation of ‘Neugeo(鰳魚)’. This is the name of the fish that appeared to be reprinted in 『Hangugeodobo』 as the error in the notation of 『Jeoneoji』 and registered it as a heading without checking it. ‘Banchoeo(飯鮹魚)’ is a translation of the error of a previously compiled dictionary that confused ‘Banchoeo(伴俏魚)’ with ‘Banchoeo(飯鮹魚)’, the fish name of webfoot octopus [Jukumi]. However, ‘Banchoeo(伴俏魚)’ is a mistake in reading the Chinese character of ‘Bandangeo(伴倘魚)’, which is a Chinese character notation for large-eyed herring [baendaengi].
