Abstract

Pohang has symbolic characters of industrialization and urbanization which summarize the process of industrialization of Korea in 1960-70. If we can say that one of the major purposes of the study of local literature is to verify the general character of Korean society starting from the local concreteness, the literature of Pohang could be the proper object. This article scrutinizes the locality of Pohang and its literary configurative aspect and meaning focusing <Pohang Literature> that has played the central role of literary activities in Pohang region. <Pohang Literature>, one of the representative media in this region, collects the works that reflect radical characteristic changes of this region. these could be divided in two parts : the real lives of the fishing village around the period of industrialization and the social changes and labour problems after the construction of POSCO. The various literary works describe rural exodus, noticeable distinction between rich and poor, developmental despotism, authoritarianism, violence of development-centrism that arise from the rapid expansion of the city. While they cannot treat well enough the labour problems which reflect the characters of this city built up wide a steel manufactural area. The local literature in Pohang has a unique meaning with regard to reflection of the reality of Pohang region that has a condensing figure of Korean society after industrialization. But it still remains several tasks on describing the real and historical characters of destruction of rural and fishing communities, poor reality of fishermen and farmers, poor and common people's livelihood around POSCO after industrialization etc.
