The thirty years after mainland liberation has been considered a p eriod void of the writings of Shanghai. However, this gap is bridged by Bai Xianyong, a writer from Taiwan, whose works carry on the past herit age and open up the future. As he recalls the flourishing past of Shang hai city, he dialectically reflects upon the fate of the city’s worldly culture, and writes about how the city’s old culture lingers abroad, thu s earning himself a reputation in the writing of Shanghai as a pioneer ing writer in the new era, especially towards the end of 20th century.
