Abstract
This paper explores the structure of philosophical reflection in the essay literature of Han Heuk-gu, focusing on the transformation of his intellectual perspectives in relation to the shifting media environments of his time. Spanning from the colonial 1930s to the post-liberation decades of the 1970s, Han’s literary oeuvre—comprising essays, poems, and criticism—demonstrates a consistent effort to elevate the essay to a serious literary form. This study investigates how his essays, published across a range of platforms including Donggwang, Shinhan Minbo, Nongmin Saenghwal, Hyundae Munhak, and Supil Munhak, reveal distinct thematic and stylistic evolutions. During the colonial period, Han employed natural imagery to convey the pain of national loss and the yearning for independence, embedding strong nationalist sentiment within his prose. In contrast, his post-liberation essays display a more contemplative tone, using natural elements not only as symbolic devices but also as mediums through which to explore human finitude, historical transition, and spiritual resilience. Especially through collections like Donghae Sanmun and Insaeng Sanmun, Han Heuk-gu’s works articulate a form of essay writing that fuses poetic intuition with philosophical inquiry. Ultimately, this paper argues that Han’s essays provide a critical foundation for understanding the identity and literary potential of modern Korean essay literature.
