패션산업에서 모델은 그동안 핵심적인 역할을 수행해왔으며, 그 중요성은 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 특히, 뉴미디어의 발달로 모델의 활동 영역은 패션쇼와 매거진 촬영을 넘어 연기자, 예능인, 뮤지컬배우, 크리에이터 등 다양한 분야로 확장되었고, 이에 따라 대중의 관심도 더욱 커졌다. 이 과정에서 전통적인 모델 외에도 다양한 유형의사람들이 모델로 캐스팅되면서, 모델의 경계가 점차 흐려지고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 기존의 모델에 대한 정의를재정립할 필요성을 제기하며, 패션모델 시장의 변화를 심층적으로 탐구하였다. 본 연구는 문헌연구를 비롯하여 질적 연구방법의 한 형태인 심층인터뷰를 진행하였다. 인터뷰 대상자로는 모델산업에 20년 이상의 경력을 보유한 전문가 4인을 선정하였다. 문헌조사를 통해 한국 패션모델의 활동 변화와 모델 교육기관의 확장 흐름을 파악하고, 전문가 인터뷰를 통해 달라진 패션모델의 의미와 그 정의를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 패션모델의 역할은 전통적인 틀을 벗어나 다각도로 확장되었으며, 모델은 이제 단순한 모델을 넘어 모델테이너로서 활동영역을 넓혔다. 둘째, 모델교육은 단순히 워킹과 포즈 교육을 넘어, 다양한 분야로의 확장 가능성을 열어주는 방향으로 발전하였다. 셋째, 다양한 유형의 패션모델 등장으로 새로운 아름다움에 대한 기준과 사회적 포용성이 확장되고 있음을 확인하였다. 넷째, 모델은 외적인 이미지를 전달하는 존재를 넘어, 각자의 개성과 재능을 발휘하는 새로운 모습으로 변화하였으며, 이를 통해 모델의 정의를 새롭게 재정립하였다.
Abstract
Models have long played a central role in the fashion industry, and their significance continues to grow. With the rise of new media, the modeling profession has expanded beyond fashion shows and magazine photoshoots to include acting, entertainment, musical theatre, and content creation. As diverse individuals are now being cast as models, the boundaries of the profession have become increasingly blurred. This study reexamines the definition of a model and explores changes in the fashion modeling industry. U sing literature review and in-depth interviews with four experts with over 20 years of experience in the modeling field, the research analyzed shifts in model activities, education, and social perception. Findings reveal that the role of fashion models has expanded into multidimensional forms of expression, leading to the emergence of “modeltainers.” Model education now fosters broader career potential, while new standards of beauty and social inclusivity are taking shape. U ltimately, the model is redefined as an individual who embodies personal identity and creativity beyond appearance.
