Abstract
There are many reasons of hair damage. Scalp disease, environmental pollution, ultraviolet radiation and chemical treatment are known as causes of human hair damage. Especially chemical treatment is a major reason of hair damage. Although, there are a number of methods for measurement of hair damage, it is very complicated and takes a long time. This study was designed to make easy and fast to measure the hair damage. In this paper, I used spectrophotometer for methylene blue absorption, tensile tester for tensile strength and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for ultrastructure of damaged hair. Methylene blue absorption means the degree of damage of hair cuticle and change of physical properties of damaged hair. Tensile strength and elongation mean the degree of damage of cell membrane complex (CMC), inter cortical cell, inter macrofibrils (IMF) and change of mechanical properties of damaged hair. Furthermore, it is possible that observation of ultrastructure of damaged hair fraction. These physical and mechanical properties are very important for development for various hair care and hair cosmetic products. For make damaged hair samples, virgin hair was bleached and permed. Bleach solution was made of different hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration (6 %, 9 %, 12 %), and permed with thioglycolic acid (6%, pH 6) for 30 min and then with sodium bromate for 20 min. Methylene blue absorption and tensile strength were related to hydrogen peroxide concentration and treat time. To know recovery rate of damaged hair after treatment, bleached and permed hair were treated with treatment solution and gel. When damaged hair treated with treatment, it seems like complete recovery. But the result of tensile strength was not. To observe the ultrastructure surface of damaged hair fraction after tensile test, we used SEM. Consequently, I suggest that easy and fast methods for measurement of hair damage. The absorbance and tensile strength were effective to measure degree of demage of hair and evaluation of changes of physical and mechanical properties of damaged hair.
