Abstract

A Study on the Schoolgirls in Modern Novels Um, Mi-ok In this study, investigating the aspect of how schoolgirls are described in modern novels, I intend to clear what modernity is like in works along with the transformation process of novels concerning schoolgirls as well as the side of women's getting formed as subject through education. Regarding modernity as dynamic concept, I make objects of study non-literature text and novels concerning schoolgirls from 1920s to middle 1930s when such dynamic reveals itself most and intend to investigate both the side of women's being disciplined and instructed through modern system, education and the side of liberation and self-regulating experience space where women defy it and reveal their desire. The rules around love affair/marriage and costume/appearance show that schoolgirls are not merely objects of enlightenment but beings exposed in the mechanism of moral judgement and sexual gaze. On the other hand, schoolgirls are found to build up their imaginary community through the readers' columns and secure their space of liberation and self-regulation through reading and free love. However, the punishment inflicted on their body as a result of schoolgirls' failure of free love shows their contradictory position concerning modernity in that, on the one hand, they personify modernity through love but on the other hand, their bodies are regarded as obstacles that weaken and contaminate modernity in connection with traditional ethics. But this divided subject is the active one breaking up the logic of modernization that forces standardization and self-organizing and enables readers to imagine more dynamic modernity.
