Abstract

He was the eldest son of father Seong, Sung[成勝] and mother from a family line of “Juk-san Park[竹山朴氏]”. His pseudonym was “Gun-bo[謹甫]” or “Nool-ong[訥翁]” and his pen name was “Mae-jook-heon[梅竹軒]”. Under the reign of king Sae-jong[世宗], he exerted himself to make Hoon-min-jung-eum[訓民正音](Han-gul, the Korean alphabet) during his position as a scholar in Jip-hyun-jun[集賢殿] and also made an effort to write such great books as “Dong-guk-jeong-un[東國正韻]” or “Hong-moo-jung-un-yok-hoon[洪武正韻譯訓]”. When he was serving a young king Dan-jong, Soo-yang-dae-goon, an uncle of king Dan-jong[端宗] usurped a throne from him(A.D. 1456, 6). In 1698, the period of king Sook-jong[肅宗], kind Dan-jong was restored so Seong, Sam-mun was also acquitted of his guilt and he came to be called “Min-jeol[愍節]”, the name of a faithful retainer.
