Abstract

With K-zombies gaining global attention, “All of Us Are Dead” has become one of the most successful K-zombie dramas to date. While the zombie genre has been challenging to adapt to the drama format due to its graphic and violent nature, “All of Us Are Dead” successfully localized the genre to Korean storytelling conventions by utilizing the Netflix platform. Previous studies on “All of Us Are Dead” have mainly focused on Nam-Ra, the “Jeolbi” (half-zombie), analyzing the themes of resistance and hope within the drama. This study reinterprets “All of Us Are Dead” from the perspective of violence by focusing on other “Jeolbi” and villains. To do so, this study separately analyzes the structural violence of the world and the individual violence of the villains. Even before the outbreak of the zombie disaster, the world of “All of Us Are Dead” is rife with everyday and systemic violence. Teacher Lee, Byung-chan initially perceives violence as a systemic issue and develops the Jonas virus to address it, but later regresses to the view that violence is inherent in human nature. The villains Na-yeon and Gui-nam personify Byung-chan's worldview. While Na-yeon establishes a hierarchy based on wealth (specifically, owning an apartment), Gui-nam enforces a hierarchy based on strength and power. They inflict pain and kill those they deem inferior, feeling no guilt in the process. They have internalized the neoliberal ideology of winner-takes-all competition and survival of the fittest, which justifies their actions. By omitting any backstory for these two villains, “All of Us Are Dead” ultimately reduces violence to an individual issue, failing to address the structural factors that underpin it.
