초록

This study aims to explore ways for young farmers to successfully settle in rural areas and to collect basic data for policies supporting young farmers and for future research. To achieve this, in-depth one-on-one interviews were conducted with young farmers in the Jeonnam region, seeking to gather comprehensive and detailed opinions on farming status, local settlement conditions, support policies, and perceptions of income instability. The survey included 27 respondents, distributed proportionally based on the population of four regions in Jeollanam-do (Gwangju suburbs, Eastern, Southwestern, and South-central regions). The main findings of the survey are summarized as follows: (1) Regarding agricultural management, young farmers frequently faced challenges related to a “lack of funds or income”. (2) When settling in a region, young farmers tended to choose areas where they had personal connections or acquaintances but also opted for unfamiliar areas if acquiring farmland was advantageous. (3) It was indirectly confirmed that young farmers not only seek sufficient income but also desire improvements in their daily quality of life, including education, healthcare, culture, and consumption. (4) Consideration should be given to enhancing the pride and job satisfaction of both young farmers and farmers in general, to ensure stable regional settlement. (5) The policies required varied depending on the settlement level of the young farmers. (6) Policies to support young farmers in maintaining their income should be implemented with greater precision and care.
