Abstract

Otitis media is one of the most common diseases of childhood. Previous studies have not been conclusive about the relationship between early otitis media experience and later language development in children since Holm and Kunze(1969) reported that otitis media was a risk factor for speech disorder in childhood. The purposes of this study were to examine methods and findings of the previous studies about the relationship between early otitis media and later language development and search a conclusion on this topic. The methods of previous studies included occasional qualitative review of retrospective studies, meta-analysis of prospective studies, and evidence-based approach with methodological flaws. Findings of this study showed that there were no to very small relationships between early otitis media and later language development in children and suggested that the main factor was not otitis media but associated hearing loss affecting the language development. Therefore, audiologic evaluation and language testing are recommended for a child with otitis media.
