Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of positive thoughts about the future on gaming addiction among out-of-school adolescents, with particular attention to examining the moderated mediation effect of ego-resiliency and gender. For the purpose of this study, using a sample of 733 out-of-school adolescents from the Panel Survey of School Dropouts composed by the National Youth Policy Institute, this study analyzed mediation and moderated mediation effects through Models 4 and 15 of the SPSS PROCESS macro. The analyzed results are as follows. First, out-of-school adolescents’ positive thoughts about the future significantly negatively influenced gaming addiction. Second, out-of-school adolescents’ ego-resiliency partially mediated the influence of positive thoughts about the future on gaming addiction. That is, the level of positive thoughts about the future increased the level of ego-resiliency, which in turn decreased the level of gaming addiction. Third, out-of-school adolescents’ gender moderated both the direct influence of positive thoughts about the future on gaming addiction and the mediation effect of ego-resiliency. Specifically, both the direct negative influence of positive thoughts about the future on gaming addiction and the indirect negative mediation effect of ego-resiliency were found for male adolescents but not for female adolescents. Based on the aforementioned results, this study discussed strategies to deal with gaming addiction among out-of-school adolescents.
