Abstract
This study is a case study analyzing the process through which cannabis users transition to hard drug addiction, particularly in the context of increasing global decriminalization of recreational cannabis use and growing demands for cannabis legalization in South Korea. The research aims to identify and understand the processes and contexts that lead cannabis users to transition to hard drugs, with the ultimate goal of preventing such transitions. The study involved 13 participants who had experienced this transition and who are currently in recovery, having maintained abstinence from drug use. Data was collected through one-on-one in-depth interviews with the participants. The collected data was condensed into 22 individual themes, which were then categorized into 9 broader thematic categories. The analysis was divided into two main units: the initiation of hard drug use and the maintenance of hard drug addiction, further divided into personal and environmental conditions. The results indicated that personal conditions leading to the initiation of hard drug use included the desire for increased pleasure, the pursuit of higher status within drug-using groups, and the loss of caution regarding drug use. Environmental conditions included falling into the trap of the drug market, the absence of an effective treatment system, and reactive resistance and escape from social stigmatization. For the maintenance of hard drug addiction, personal conditions included the enslavement to pleasure and the internalization of despair. Environmental conditions involved the dual role of the user as both a drug consumer and a dealer. Based on these findings, the study offers specific recommendations for correctional treatment and addiction therapy at the level of the Ministry of Justice, aimed at preventing cannabis users from transitioning to hard drugs and supporting their recovery.
