In verbal communication, people are often reluctant to directly express their own requirements or intentions due to various reasons, but instead choose to respond indirectly. This form of expression does not accord with Grice's cooperative principle; the listener needs to go beyond the literal meaning to find the implicit meaning. So far, the relevance theory is the strongest interpretation of the implicit meaning, and it pays full attentions to the role of schema structure. Understanding is based on the activation of schema, if it is not activated, the schema is always in a dormant state and we can only obtain through cognition in the specific context. This paper rewrites the “psychological process of understanding” summarized by other scholars and employs a functional relationship to reveal this psychological process of understanding more forthright. This research relates cognitive schemas of speaker A and listener B to infer the implicit meaning of a discourse.
