디자인 교육의 패러다임 변화에 대한 고찰 및 사례연구

Abstract

The development of digital technology, a rapid change into an information- knowledge society, and the structural problems of capitalism make designers reflect upon the notions of design and their practice in design field. At the same time, it is required for designers to discuss about paradigm shift in a design education. This paper investigates what should be focused on in design education by analyzing the changes in the design industry and education system. This paper categorizes the paradigm shifts in the scene of design education into three parts; strengthening a theory education, emphasizing a process, and permitting an invisibility of final output. The case study of 'Exformation' seminar class in Musasino Art University and research-based 'Design Literacy' class of MA Graphic Design course in London College of Communication was analyzed to investigate about how the paradigm shifts are adapted into educational scene. From now on, many discussions about the paradigm shifts in a design domain are necessary in order to keep up with the change. It is important to give designers education that helps them enlarge their perspective in relation with epistemology and cosmology based on liberal arts, and not limited by the past design notions. For this, it is urgent to develop our own pedagogy, specific courses and curriculums in design education that can be adapted to this changing paradigm.
