본 논문은 한자구형학과 인지언어학을 이론적 배경으로, 구성요소 田을 포함하는 《说文解字》 소전 자형을 연구 대상으로 삼아, 구성요소 ‘田’의 인지적 의미 확장 양상을 살펴보고, 구성요소 ‘田’의 의미 체계 특징과 그 안에 반영된 고대 중국인의 사유체계에 대해 고찰한 논문이다. 그 결과, 구성요소 田은 농경을 비롯해 밭 면적 단위, 지형적 구획, 행정 구역, 제사 의례, 추상적 개념 등 다양한 영역으로 의미를 넓혀 갔으며, 이때 환유적 전개가 가장 핵심적인 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 田이 농경사회에서 단순한 경작지를 넘어 행정·의례·문화 제도와 긴밀히 연결되어 고대 중국인의 사유체계와 사회 질서 전반을 반영하는 핵심 상징이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 분석은 한자 구성요소 연구에 인지적 관점을 적용해, 고대 한자 자형에 내재된 의미 구조와 문화적 동기를 구체적으로 밝히는 데 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 앞으로도 타 구성요소로 연구 범위를 확장하여, 한자 및 한자어 교육 분야에 도움이 될 기초자료를 축적하는 후속 연구를 진행할 예정이며, 문자 해석과 문화사적 배경을 접목해 한문 교육의 효과적 방안을 제시하는 작업도 함께 진행할 예정이다.
Abstract
Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Chinese character structure studies and cognitive linguistics, this paper examines the Xiao Zhuan forms of characters containing the structural element “田” in Shuowen Jiezi, focusing on its cognitive semantic expansions. Through an analysis informed by conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, the study reveals that “田” extends its meanings to a wide range of domains, from agriculture and land-measurement units to geographical and administrative divisions, ceremonial contexts, and more abstract concepts. The findings highlight the crucial role of metonymic development in this process. Moreover, “田” emerges as a core symbol in ancient Chinese agrarian society, intrinsically connected not only to farmland but also to governance, ritual, and cultural institutions—reflecting the broader thought system and social order of the time. By applying a cognitive approach to the study of Chinese character components, this research elucidates the underlying meaning structures and cultural motivations embedded in ancient character forms. Future investigations will expand to other structural elements, contributing foundational data that can enhance both Chinese character and Chinese vocabulary education.
