Abstract

In the era of image-based media integration, story-based game apps are emerging as a convergence of picture books and games, showcasing the potential of digital picturebooks. These game apps reflect a dual nature, combining traditional narratives with interactive storytelling. This study focuses on interactive storytelling, first by reviewing the literature on the evolution of picturebook media to confirm the characteristics of digital picturebooks distinct from general media types. Secondly, it integrates the concept of interactive narrative into traditional narrative frameworks from classical narratology, considering games as narrative systems. Through case studies of story-based game apps, it analyzes the narrative discourse and interactive elements embedded within them, thereby presenting new possibilities for interactive storytelling inherent in digital picturebooks.
