Abstract

Many single-person households in early adulthood experience challenges related to eating behaviors, yet efforts to improve them remain insufficient. This study investigates the causes of these issues among individuals who recognize poor eating behaviors but do not actively seek improvement. A tailored design strategy was developed based on the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour (COM-B) model to enhance users’ capability and motivation. A mobile service was designed to facilitate behavior change through two key features. First, the “Daily Assessment” function encourages users to reflect on their eating behaviors, fostering self-awareness and motivation. Second, the “Daily Report” function provides information on potential health risks and offers personalized recommendations to promote change. The service’s effectiveness was evaluated through two rounds of user testing. Results showed that the Daily Assessment function increased self-awareness and motivation, while the Daily Report enhanced awareness of health risks. After using the service, participants showed greater willingness to adopt healthier eating behaviors, with some demonstrating actual behavioral changes. This study is meaningful in that it addresses limitations of existing eating behaviors services and offers a user-centered design strategy that effectively promotes behavior change.
