영국에서의 동아시아 한국학의 연구동향

이 글은 현재 영국에서 한국학의 중심이 되고 있는 런던대학 소아스의 교육과 연구현황을 구체적으로 살펴보는 것을 목표로 작성된 영구동향 보고논문이다. 먼저 이 글에서는 영국의 한국학의 전반적인 연구동향과 한영관련 연구 문헌에 대한 개괄적 검토를 하였는데, 영국의 한국학과의 경우 미국이나 카나다에 비해 전공하는 학생 수는 많지 않으나, 한국학 전공자가 대부분 한인교포인 북미와는 달리 현지 영국인과 유럽인이라는 점이 특징적이라 할 수 있었고, 한국어습득 차원을 넘어 본격적인‘한국학’을 지향한다는 면에서 차이가 있었다. 특히 영국 한국학의 중심을 이루고 있는 런던대학 소아스의 경우 10명의 한국학 강의/연구 교수를 확보하여, 학부 강좌에서도 한국어뿐만 아니라 번역, 작문 과정은 물론 시, 소설, 역사, 문화 등에 관한 강좌도 개설하고 있을 정도였다. 또 한국학연구소도 정기적인 세미나와 집중적인 워크샵이 개최하는데, 영국과 한국의 학자뿐만 아니라 미국과 캐나다, 유럽 등지의 저명한 한국학연구자를 초청하고 있었다. 이 글에서는 런던대학의 한국학연구현황을 구체적으로 살펴본 뒤 다음과 같은 개선점을 지적하였다. 런던대학 한국학연구소의 독자적인 공간의 확보, 독자적인 한국학 저널의 발간, 연구비의 지속적 지원, 런던대학과 한국 대학의 한국학과/ 한국학연구기관의 학문적 인적 교류의 활성화가 필요함을 제언하였다. 이런 문제들이 해결된다면 런던대학 한국학연구는 더욱 탄력을 받을 것이다.
Abstract
This research paper focus on the understanding on the present state of Korean Studies in U.K., especially the Centre of Korean Studies in School of Oriental and African Studies(SOAS), University of London. Firstly, this paper deals with present general trend of Korean Studies in U.K., and make short list of the papers on relation between Korea and U.K. Secondly, this paper deals with present teaching and studying trend of Korean Studies in SOAS, University of London. In SOAS, There are 60 under graduate students who study Korean language and culture. They are English and EU citizen as different in U.S.A and Canada. In U.S.A and Canada, most of the students majoring Korean Studies are Korean or American-Korean. SOAS, University of London, held many seminars and workshops every term. In 2008/2009 year, there are 15 seminar series and 3 workshops on various topic on Korean Studies as like Korean history, Korean literature, Korean Media, Korean film, Korean art and so on. After staying 1 year in SOAS, I have a some idea to level up the Korean studies of University of London as follows. First of all, Centre of Korean Studies should have research room and seminar room, and library. And Centre of Korean Studies should publish Korean Studies journal. Korean government and Korea Research Foundation should fund steadily to Centre of Korean Studies, SOAS. Finally, Centre of Korean Studies should try to strengthen the relationship between SOAS and Universty of Korea.
