Abstract

There are certain relationships of power in overseas exhibitions of Korean art. This thesis tried to reveal that the exhibitions <Masterpieces of Korean Art>(1957), and <5,000 Years of Korean Art>(1979) are examples of the contact zones where an asymmetrical relationship of powers exists, by looking into the histories of these exhibitions and perspectives in the field of art history. The cultural memory of the US of the late 1950s and 1970s will be reviewed through the interaction by various agents including the museums, governments, and people in the space of America where two exhibitions were held. The first overseas exhibition <Masterpieces of Korean Art> was planned with the intent to make the Cold War allies against the communist invasion after the Korean War. However, it was difficult to find the meaning of the exhibition and its significance in art history to the American visitors who didn’t have an understanding of Korea and Korean art. Two decades later, <5,000 Years of Korean Art> exhibited twice as much art as the first one did, and there were more explanations, but the cultural memory did not change so much compared to the first one. To change the understanding of Americans, the National Museum of Korea stressed nationalism in Korean art, and a few critics accepted that perspective. Nonetheless, it was difficult to bind all Korean arts to the essential characteristics of nationalism or naturalism. Although people started to realize that Korean art is different from the Chinese and the Japanese, it was difficult to overcome the narrow-minded perspective of Orientalism. Moreover, by comparing the arts of the three nations, they built the hierarchy as a cultural memory of the East Asian arts.
