초록
To study the significance of firm-specific human capital, most previous studies have analyzed the effect of tenure on workers' wages, but wages may not reflect the significance of firm-specific human capital. Others have analyzed the effect of job ranks on workers' mobility, but job ranks are too discrete and difficult to gather and compare across firms. This paper argues that estimating the effect of tenure on workers' mobility can provide the best compromise. Using the Swedish employer-employed matched data, such estimation suggests that while the value of firm-specific human capital is significant, the value of occupation-specific human capital is larger.
Abstract
To study the significance of firm-specific human capital, most previous studies have analyzed the effect of tenure on workers' wages, but wages may not reflect the significance of firm-specific human capital. Others have analyzed the effect of job ranks on workers' mobility, but job ranks are too discrete and difficult to gather and compare across firms. This paper argues that estimating the effect of tenure on workers' mobility can provide the best compromise. Using the Swedish employer-employed matched data, such estimation suggests that while the value of firm-specific human capital is significant, the value of occupation-specific human capital is larger.
