Abstract
This study investigates the regional income disparity in Korea since the 1990s. Based on the income convergence test and coefficient of variation analysis, the major factor for the rising regional income disparity is found to be the evolution of regional industrial specialization which increased the overall regional productivity difference. Income disparity between services and light industry-oriented urban and heavy industry-oriented non-urban areas widened. It implies that the regional policy should focus on services competitiveness and consumption infrastructure such as education, culture, and health in regional focal cities rather than manufacturing-oriented industrial development.
