Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between the birth of a literary girl and female writers through an analysis of Jang Deok-jo’s short novels Sunflower and Female Artists. The new representation of “literature girls” is the result of the discipline surrounding the daily lives and emotions of female writers. Jang Dukjo’s early short stories effectively reproduce the social identity and on to logical anxiety of “literary woman” as “hysteria.” In particular, these representations are important in that they reveal the possibility of discipline of male-dominated power and there location of gendered emotions. The subject of “literary woman” is born in a pathological state, and women’s resistance and voices are sutured. Colonial literature’s strategy of limiting women’s literary enjoyment and artistic achievement reveals the oppression of the ruling powers that created an environment in which female writers could not grow. This paper is meaningful in that it specifically re-evaluates women writers’ methods of survival, which are inherent in the process of calling summoning “literature girls.” Moreover, it reveals the authoritarian attitudes adopted by colonial women writers in their oppressive daily lives, where, subject to the pressures of dominant discourse, they were forced to awaken.
