Abstract

This article focuses on two reportage collections, Daughters of Darkness(『어둠의 딸들』) (1981) and Women for Sale in Seoul(『서울서 팔리는 여자들』)(1983) to examine the changes in narrative perspectives and representations of the sex industry. The collections cover the rapid expansion of the sex industry beyond camp towns and prostitution blocks, while being intertwined with multiple layers such as economic, cultural, and international relations, and also highlight groups of women who cross various social borders inside and outside of the sex industry. However, there are differences between male and female writers in terms of reporting techniques and narrative styles. While the male writers remained in the role of external observer, Kang Seok-kyung(강석경) and Yoo Jae-soon(유재순) went undercover to the sex industry. Their reportages show complex mixtures of witness account, self-confession, and detached commentary, depending on the location of the first-person narrator. Their reportages portray women in the sex industry as agents who devise multifaceted strategies for survival and safety within violent structures, thereby moving beyond moralistic perspectives and victimization narratives. This article reveals that the two collections report women’s shifting positions amid the expansion of the sex industry, as well as the expansion of reportage genre in the early 1980s.
