T. S. 엘리엇의 『대성당에서의 살인』은 대주교 베켓의 순교를 이상화하는 대신에 그를 하나님을 위해 자신의 생명을 희생한 성자로서 사람들의 영적 영역을 항구히 지배하고자 하는 문제적 인물로 극화하고 있다. 하지만, 기독교 세계에서의 자신의 영적 지도력을 항구히 하려는 그의 욕망을 부분적으로 해체해버리는 기사들과 대면을 거치면서, 그는 자신의 순교가 자신의 자유의지가 아니라 절대타자인 하나님의 섭리에 의해 좌우됨을 깨닫게 된다. 대주교의 하나님의 뜻에 최종적인 복종은 그의 타락한 영혼을 구제하는데 기여하며, 이를 지켜본 캔터베리의 가난한 여인들인 코러스는 베켓의 죽음을 통해 영적 구원의 길을 모색하게 된다.
Abstract
Instead of idealizing the martyrdom of Archbishop Becket, T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral dramatizes him as a problematic figure, who seeks to dominate eternally the spiritual realm of people as the saint who willingly sacrifices his own life for the sake of God. However, confronting the knights who in part de-construct Becket’s desire to perpetuate his spiritual leadership in the world of Christianity, he comes to realize that his martyrdom is ultimately governed by the providence of God, the absolute Other, not by his own free will. The death of Becket opens the way for the spiritual redemption of the chorus, the poor women of Canterbury, who witness the archbishop’s final submission to the will of God, which actually serves for the redemption of his corrupted soul.
