인간을 포함해서 우주만물을 지배하고 통치하는 “실체”의 존재 유무를 단언하기란 어렵지만 다양한 종교들이 실체가 존재한다는 전제를 내세우며 그 중심과 소통 또는 하나가 되는 것을 인생 최고의 목적으로 삼고 있다. 그리고 그 실체와의 만남에 이르는 방법 또한 몇 종류가 존재하는 데 본 글에서는 요가를 통한 우주만물의 지존자와의 만남의 모습을 살펴보았다. 지존자와의 만남을 이루는 방법 중에 하나를 힌두교에서는 요가로 설정하고 있다. 그 요가에서 가장 중요한 것이 바로 인간 개인의 생각 또는 이기심을 버릴 것을 요구하고 있다. 엘리엇 또한 네 사중주에서 그 모습을 여실히 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
It has been a long-time controversy, philosophical and religious, whether there exists a center in the universe or not. Conspicuously most metaphysically-oriented thinkers believe in or presume God or an absolute reality, as an existence or force that controls the universe, voluntarily or involuntarily. Eliot also acknowledges the presence of God, presenting His intentions and schemes in many of his works. Yoga in India presents a convincing way to communicate with God, carrying many attributes similar to western metaphysical and religious ways of thinking. Above all, Yoga emphasizes that we should abandon our greed and selfish ego and depend on God's will in order to transcend the phenomenal world and access the world beyond. Through confronting God we get a certain form of inner freedom from the practical desire, the release from action and suffering, etc. Eliot attempts to present this state of mind in his Four Quartets in quite noteworthy ways.
