「J. 알프레드 프루프록의 연가」에서 나타나는 시적 화자의 불안의 기분은 엘리엇의 초기시에 보여주는 다른 여러 감정들처럼 현대인들의 실존에 대한 이해와 밀접하게 맞물려 있다. 본 논문에서는 시적 화자의 불안의 감정을 하이데거의 초기 사상에서 비중 있게 다뤄진 불안의 의미와 함께 분석함으로써, 불안의 실존론적 의미에 주목하고자 한다. 실존론적 의미에서 프루프록의 불안은 세계를 이해하고 자신의 존재를 깨닫게 되는 기분이다. 불안은 자기를 상실한 채 비본래적으로 살아가는 시적 화자에게, 섬뜩함으로부터 존재를 알려오며 양심의 목소리를 통해 본래적인 삶의 가능성을 개시하는 기분이라고 할 수 있다. 엘리엇은 프루프록의 불안을 통해 어둡고 절망적인 현대사회를 진단하기 보다는 불안을 통해 오히려 자기를 상실한 현대인들의 실존 회복의 가능성을 모색하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 불안은 하이데거의 초기 사상에 해당하는 『존재와 시간』과 『형이상학이란 무엇인가?』에서 “무”와의 관련성을 가지고 깊이 있게 사유되고 있다. 불안과 불안이 드러내는 무의 성격은 「프루프록」에서 시적화자의 불안과 불안이 가져다주는 “압도적인 문제”를 해석하는 바탕이 된다.
Abstract
The mood of anxiety in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is closely related to understanding the modern people’s existence as other feelings have been in Eliot’s early poems. However, unlike other feelings such as boredom and horror which have usually reflected the desolate and hopeless condition of modern society. Prufrock’s anxiety is suggested as a necessary feeling for modern people. The purpose of this article is to illuminate the existential meaning of Prufrock’s anxiety, by approaching it through Heidegger’s existential-ontological thought of angst based on restoration of existence. Angst discloses the wholeness of the being of Dasein and the being of the world isomorphically and individuates it from falling prey. Prufrock’s angst with an uncanny feeing manifests his intrinsic being and indicates to him the character of his authentic possibility through conscience as a call. Prufrock’s “overwhelming question” occurring from his relationship with his ownmost being, “you” and others as an external social milieu can be interpreted by angst and nothing.
